John Wesley's prayer had a huge impact on me this week. Specifically, the following words moved me: Save me from the idolatry of loving the world, or any of the things of the world Let me never love any creature but for Your sake and in subordination to Your love. Take full possession of my heart; raise there Your throne and command there as You do in heaven.
Having wrestled with this prayer I wanted to pursue God's love in the sermon this week.
The Gospel of John is noted for the many references to the Love of God. Although, Chapter 8 is not typically the first reference, it is a very moving display of the love of God.
The First Sermon Point: The Love of God is Forgiving.
The Pharisees had hoped to make a public spectacle of this woman who was caught in the act of adultery while also setting a trap for Jesus. Jesus saw through the plot to the heart of the woman and the heart of the Pharisees.
Second Sermon Point: The Love of God is Sacrificial
The reason that Jesus could tell this woman, "go and sin no more," was because he would be her sin bearer. She was pardoned to go free while Jesus accepted the penalty for her sin, and the sin of all who will call upon his name in faith believing that He is the son of God.
Application: Continue this week in the Love of God. Seek forgiveness for the bunkers of sin that you have built in your heart. Rest assured that the sacrifice of Jesus is sufficient to heal your wounds and capture your heart. Open your heart to be the full possession of Jesus as Lord and King.
May God richly bless you all.
Brother Keith
